Microchannels Constructed on Rough Hydrophobic Surfaces
نویسنده
چکیده
A microchannel was constructed between two glass slides, taking advantage of their surface properties. The channel geometry was defined by a line that was previously printed on the slide surface using a highly water-soluble liquid [2-(2ethoxyethoxy)ethanol] as the ink. Water, which acted as the working fluid flowed along this line. Although the channel did not have any sidewalls, the water was fixed along the printed line due to the large contact-angle hysteresis of the slide surface whose properties were rough and hydrophobic. Such roughness was more advantageous over smoothness due to the large contact-angle hysteresis of water and the good wettability of the ink. Using a syringe pump, the water was able to continuously flow through a 1 mm wide and 0.13 mm deep channel without flooding.

Plasma processing is demonstrated as a generic technology to fabricate, roughen, control the wetting properties, create well controlled passive hydrophobic valves, and finally also control the protein adsorption in polymeric microfluidic channels. Lithography and deep anisotropic O2 plasma etching directly on polymeric substrates were utilized to pattern microchannels, at conditions where very ...
متن کاملNumerical simulation of microflow over superhydrophobic surfaces by lattice Boltmann method
The superhydrophobicity of a microchannel is determined by not only the wettability of channel wall but also the surface topography. Recent experiments have found that superhrydrophobic surfaces can be achieved by pattering roughness on hydrophobic surfaces. In this paper, the dynamics of two-phase flow in microchannel with different wettability and topography is studied numerically by the latt...
متن کاملSimulation of fluid flow in hydrophobic rough microchannels
Surface effects become important in microfluidic setups because the surface to volume ratio becomes large. In such setups the surface roughness is not any longer small compared to the length scale of the system and the wetting properties of the wall have an important influence on the flow. However, the knowledge about the interplay of surface roughness and hydrophobic fluid–surface interaction ...
متن کاملCellular Behavior of Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells on Wettable Gradient Polyethylene Surfaces
Appropriate surface wettability and roughness of biomaterials is an important factor in cell attachment and proliferation. In this study, we investigated the correlation between surface wettability and roughness, and biological response in human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs). We prepared wettable and rough gradient polyethylene (PE) surfaces by increasing the power of a radio frequency co...
متن کاملHydrophobic Non-fouling Surfaces for Droplet Based Microfluidic Bioanalytical Systems
This paper presents the principle, fabricated structure, characterization and results obtained for a new class of surfaces—“hydrophobic non-fouling surfaces”—for droplet-based microfluidics. Building on the theory of wetting of rough surfaces, we have developed novel surfaces which are chemically hydrophilic, i.e., the droplet is in contact with a non-fouling hydrophilic material but exhibits h...
